So it's 1 Nov and I last updated on 31 Aug. Yes I suck, I'm no fuuuunnnn. Have put on 2kg in the past 2 months, no one to blame but myself. So, I've decided to do a push ups and tricep dips challenge starting today for this month. Did 10 girl push ups and 10 tricep dips this morning, will be adding on 5 each day.
Inspiration came from hubby who has been doing a chin ups challenge for himself. He can easily do 10 now when his previous comfort number was 5. So proud of him :) think he's working up to a handstand push up.
Diet wise things have been pretty sucky! Have not been cooking much at home at all :( need to change this
Ok that's all for now, till next time!

Insidious weight gain
Survived my first week at my new job! I can't say much about it but it's a high security area and I can't bring my mobile to office (among other things) so no more mobile blogging during the day :(
I have to say, even with watching what I eat for the past 2 weeks during the eid period, I gained back about half a kilo. Kind of expected but definitely not welcome! I've identified some major stumbling blocks at work... 1. Breakfast and lunch are times for networking and socializing. 2. Food available at the cafeteria is heavy on carbs. Really, really heavy. 3. Lunch venues are decided collectively, so will need to make smarter choices when outside.
On the other hand, my new colleagues are into running so I guess I can join them... Just hope I can keep up! I know I can't outrun a bad diet, so will really need to watch myself. I also have the option of walking home from work, which takes about 40min. Problem is, I can only do this if someone picks up my daughter from childcare, otherwise I'll be too late. So many things to sort out!
Running my 10k in 2 weeks! Will really need to step up my workouts. I can do this!!

The 30th birthday post
So I turned the big 3-0 today. Don't really feel any different though. Hmm. Did a weigh in after Iftar just now and guess what? Weight was 73.8kg :) woot woot! Total of 4kg lost during Ramadan, now all I need to do is make sure I don't gain it all back within the first 2 days of raya haha.
So I didn't really hit the 30 by 30 goal... But I will take 8.8 pounds :) didn't do any measurements but I can see the difference. So yes, eyeballing it. Just hoping that the downward trend will continue and that I won't just throw this all away. Will be on leave the first week of raya so I hope I will have the discipline to do some daily exercise. Onwards!

30 by 30 update 2
Right, so I measured my weight a couple of days ago and it seems that I've lost 2.5kg from the past 12 days of fasting during Ramadan. Woohoo! Almost at my first goal!
I love Ramadan it's my magic month. Was going to do a post about it but just didn't have any time the past couple of weeks...
My sick aunt passed away, was very upset by it. I think she was suffering quite a lot by that point, could have been a relief for her I guess... Hope she's in a better place now, she was always my favourite.
Toddler's been really cranky and whiny for the past week, also had a fever last week. Think she's been picking up bad habits in school like whining and not telling me what she wants. Soooo annoying! Have been telling her to be nice and don't whine.
The hubby's also been sick the past week and so we didn't end up doing any of the chores or errands that we had planned. Sigh.
Anyways, Ramadan is fun, I'm dead tired at the end of the day and all I wanna do is sleep at 8pm. Sigh. Did manage to squeeze a couple of workouts in though. Will try to have some coffee tonight and see if I can stay awake long enough to do a bit of interval training.
Ok till next time.

30 by 30 update
Alright, fasted for 3 days last week but didn't manage to stay away from carbs at all! Did do a couple of workouts, I think I'm getting stronger but I guess only time will tell. Seriously need to get my act together and start measuring and taking notes about my workouts.
Went to visit my sick aunt who's taken a turn for the worse. Makes me realise more than ever how important health is... Then again if eating well and being fit is easy, everyone would be doing it. It's more convenient to just visit the doc and pop a pill or ten...
Anyways, think I'll be able to hit maybe the halfway point of my goal in a month's time when I turn 30. 30 by 30 in 30. Haha. Awesome.
Onwards, never gonna give it up!

Still Trying...
Ok so I fasted on mon and thurs, supposed to fast today too but just could not wake up. Urgh. Had a lovely paleo-ish meal for dinner last night- sirloin steak, potatoes and lettuce. Was surprisingly extremely filling... Still haven't gotten round to making my cream of broccoli soup though... Will try to do it tonight!

A week of no rice and bread
I'm quite glad I managed to get through an entire week without rice and bread... Unfortunately I caved on Saturday and had briyani at my friend's wedding... Managed to avoid rice the day after but had bread for dinner and a cupcake that I made.
I noticed that when I don't plan ahead, I suffer like hell for it. Whenever I couldn't think of anything to eat during lunch, I'd have a latte or something instead. -_- Yes I know it defeats the purpose to replace carbs with sugar... So this week the aim is to avoid rice, bread, baked goods AND sugar laden drinks. Good thing is, will be fasting pretty much all week. Bad thing is, I'll be very very tempted to cheat and I might not have time for food prep. Sucks but I gotta find a way. Preparation is the key to success!
Didn't get any formal exercise in this week, walked to my bus stop (about 10 min brisk walk) every day though. Need to try harder!

Reality check at the salon... :(
Ok so Wednesday's section lunch wa a semi- success. Managed to stay away from the carbs and ordered a rib eye steak, but also had a frosted chocolate malt... There was some drama with the steak cos I ordered it well done and it came with blood still oozing from it and I was like wtf? Called the waiter over and he was like, you ordered medium. I was like, I would never order medium. I ordered it well done. Gggrrrr. Don't know about you but I like my meat dead and cooked not bleeding all over my plate. Sheesh. The ice cream was good! But I didn't enjoy it as much as I used to. Times are a changin'!
Had dinner at MIL's and told her I wasn't having any rice. She was like, but why, it's your sis who's getting married not you. I'm like, but I have to lose weight before I turn 30! Haha.
Anyway, was fasting yesterday, had some eggs for sahur. Had some yummy fried chicken for dinner... Mmmmm chicken... I know I know it should not have been fried but I'm fasting here :p
Since I wasn't eating during lunch, I went for a haircut at the salon I've been going to for the past... 16 years!! Of cos it's never the same hairdresser lah. It's funny how the bright lights and many mirrors suddenly make you realise that DAMN I am not that young anymore! Even from 2 metres away in the mirror I could see a strand of white hair taunting me :( and hello double chin! Depressing... The next time I step into that salon I better make sure I will like what's looking back at me in the mirror!!

breakfast dialogue
So this morning I made the hubby his usual bowl of oats and made a couple of sunny side up eggs for myself.
F: how come you get yummy eggs and I get yucky oats?
Me: yucky oats? I thought you liked oats?
F: (incoherent mumbling)
Me: well I'm primal and you're not... So there
Then I gave him a bite of my eggs to show him what he was missing :)
Interestingly enough, he admitted that the side fat on his stomach went away when he tried going primal for a couple of weeks... And that it's back now since he didn't continue being primal. Coincidence? I think not!
In other news my Head is taking us out to an ice-cream buffet tomoro for lunch. I hope I have the willpower to say no and order a ceasar salad with chicken instead. After all, discipline is about giving up what you want now, for what you want most.

Omg headache much?
So, made it through one day with no carbs and now I am freaking hungry and I have a headache. Headache could possibly be due to lack of sleep too since I've been up since 6am...
Lessons learnt today:
1. Kai lan tastes terrible in my usual stir-fry. Should cook it in turmeric and coconut milk next time.
2. If I don't bring my own food to work, I will starve or pay an exorbitant amount for an almost primal meal.
3. Kampong chicken really is tougher than the usual stuff :(

30 by 30? well alright then
ok i'm back. the reason i've been gone? going primal is freaking hard lor. been doing it half-assed for the past 6 months or so and now i think i'm finally ready to do it full-assed.
i'd been looking for a reason to make this work and none seemed to stick. i considered doing it for myself and my own good, but it just didn't seem like a good enough reason to me... maybe because i consider myself relatively healthy albeit overweight. yes, i know the weight is a problem in itself but i can run a 5k, i can bust out a few push ups and squats and do planks... maybe i don't look as good as i'd like to but that's why i only take pictures from neck up :p
after comtemplating the situation sommore, i finally came to a conclusion... i need to do this to be a walking ad on what eating right and being active can do for people. first of all, not just any people but for my family. i have had an aunt who passed away from brain cancer, another is currently battling colon cancer and i don't want to see anyone else going down that road. a close family friend and my hubby's religious teacher also recently passed away from colon cancer. i tried telling my aunt about going primal/ paleo and she started telling me about cancer patients who went on a green juice diet and had to do it FOREVER and alkaline water. i was like, whut???
then i realised that just preaching about this lifestyle is not going to cut it. i need to SHOW them that it works, and hopefully that will interest them enough to want to try it for themselves. therefore my new goal: 30 pounds off by the time i turn 30 in august. why 30? because 13.6kg just doesn't sound as nice. haha. it is a little more than i was originally planning to lose but you know what they say... if your goals don't scare you, you're not aiming high enough. or in this case, low enough.
hopefully i will be blogging more regularly. maybe once a week for a start and we'll see how it goes from there. so here goes nothing, starting stats and first goal:
start point:
vitals 112-99-103 (cm)
weight 77kg/ 170 lbs
first goal:
weight 74.8kg/ 165 lbs
yup that's all i'm measuring. vital stats and weight. using weight as a goal marker as it's easier than calculating vital stats. don't worry, will be posting up the stats that go with the weight. i did not set a time frame for when i should get to the first goal, but i figure the 8 wk countdown is scary enough :)
8 weeks to birthday!!

Primal Day 3
B:
Hot milo
6 OCK chicken nuggets
L:
Chicken briyani
Teh halia (ginger tea)
Primal FAIL on the briyani. Teh was fantastic though...
Exercise:
Walked a lot during lunch. Didn't wear my pedometer so I have no idea how much walking I did. Hanged on my chin up bar for one minute at 10 second intervals. Aiming to do one pull up by end of this month. Baby steps!
D:
Salmon, broccoli, tiny bit of rice
I need to get me a cast iron pan!

Primal Day 2
B:
Mee Siam kering with bargadel
Apple beetroot carrot juice
I have no excuse, hadn't had the Mee Siam in a while and felt like it. So there.
L: Nasi lemak with otak2
Ok 2 meals with sambal is NOT a good idea. Officially feel like crap. Head is throbbing, eyes are heavy, tummy is churning. Need to get off the carbs and chili...
S: salted caramel banana cupcake
D: Nasi minyak, mutton and chicken @ my MIL's
What can I say, this is an example of what a primal day should NOT look like. After 3 trips to the loo I'm inclined to believe it.

Primal Day 1
Am still aching from that 5km run. This is what happens when you anyhow whack and don't warm up or stretch. :(
Anyway, I'm gonna try going primal again from today. Will be tracking my diet since that's 80% of the battle, and my fitness as and when I happen to do any exercises. Haha.
Breakfast:
1 cup hot Milo
3 OCK chicken nuggets
3 OCK prawn nuggets
I know, OCK is not primal but all my other options have carbs in them. So, lesser of 2 evils I reckon.
Lunch:
CBTL Caesar salad with chicken
Did not finish this, no mood lah
Snack:
Handful of prawn crackers, couple of pieces of choc
Dinner:
Pan seared salmon, broccoli, little bit of rice
Not too shabby... The salmon was awesome! Had to have the rice lah. Is there was leftovers after I divided it up between the hubby and the toddler. Waste not want not! Got 10kg of rice to finish up and we use about a cup a day... Yup, loooong way to go!

Fell off the wagon
Yup, almost 4 months into the new year and I'm still not primal! Urgh. Been pretty tough to find primal food for breakfast and lunch while I'm at work... I've identified my pitfalls though so I will be working on overcoming them. My pitfalls are basically avoiding bad food for breakfast and lunch. Stayed away from fastfood for a good month or so but slowly crept back to it since there are so few choices at work.
Yes I know it's all excuses and I can definitely do better...
On the fitness side, I completed a 5km run yesterday which was awesome since I haven't actually gone running in ages and did not specifically train for this run even though I had the intentions. Thighs are aching like hell now. Urgh... This has motivated me to continue running because it does feel pretty good to run... I have a 2.4km fitness test end of May. Need to run it in 12.5 min to get a gold rating. Gonna get the hubby to take my timing this weekend to see how far I need to go.
Tomoro is a new day, need to make the most of it.
